Niger, Mali to hoist country flags in Africa military games

Some democratically unstable countries, including Niger, Mali and Bukina Faso, have indicated interest to fly their flags in the forthcoming All Africa Military Games in Abuja.

The development is coming after the Economic Community of West Africa, ECOWAS, agreed to lift sanctions on the Junta-led countries, following the military coupe’detat that swept part of the region.

Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, told a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, that Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso were among the 27 countries that have already sent in their list of the athletes and participants for the games.

General Musa, who stated this while answering questions from journalists, said what was important is for African countries to be together as brothers and sisters during the games.

“On the issue of the Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, they’ve all acknowledged they are coming. They’ve sent in their list already. So, they are going to be part of these events. That for us, is very important, because we are all brothers and sisters. So, we need to be together.”

He disclosed that a total of 3,000 officials and athletes from 42 countries, will be participating in the continental events aimed at fostering camaraderie and synergy among the African military circle.

The Chief of Defense Staff, who pointed that the game provides the opportunity for the Nigerian Military to compete at a global scale, expressed confidence in the military to bring pride to the country.

“The hosting of the All African games in Abuja is not only a testament of Nigeria’s commitment to promote peace and security in the region, but also an opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities as a host nation.

“The games will provide an opportunity for our Armed Forces to compete at an international level and provide opportunities to exchange best practices with our counterparts from African countries; and build lasting relationships that can contribute to security and stability of the continent.”

Earlier, the Chairman, Local Organising Committee for the games, Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, commended the FCT Minister for his leadership qualities as well as his contributions to the sporting world.

He assured that the 2024 game with the theme, “Enhancing Military Corporation in Africa Through Sports”, will allow military personnel interact with their counterparts across the continent, and bring unity and stability among the rank and file of the Military.

Responding, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, commended the CDS for taking the bull by the horn by accepting the hosting rights.

He noted that the FCT will be showcased on a global scale, with participants becoming ambassadors of Nigeria when they return to their countries.

“Let me thank the Chief of Defence Staff and his team for giving Abuja the opportunity to be the host of this all-important military games that involves all countries in Africa. What you have done is to take the bull by the horn by showcasing Nigerians, and Abuja in particular, to the entire African world.

“You may not understand the impact this will have on their citizens and Nigerians in general. First of all, you will come to appreciate the fact that FCT is safe, and to an extent, Nigeria is safe. Where you have over 3,000 people coming to a city that they go, you can see what they will go back with. They will be our ambassadors and tell outsiders that look, indeed, Abuja is one of the best cities in Africa and indeed Nigeria is really moving forward.

“On the part of the FCT be sure that we will give all the necessary support and ensure that security is tight. We are already working with sister agencies to ensure that Abuja is safe for the game.”
