The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has provided much-needed relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by flooding in Anambra State. The distribution, flagged off at the Umuoba Anam IDP camp in Anambra East, was part of the 2024 flood response efforts approved by the Federal Government.
Representing NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, Dr. Martins Udeinya Ejike, Director of Human Resources Management, emphasized the agency’s commitment to supporting all affected persons. “These relief items are intended not only for those within IDP camps but also for flood-affected individuals residing outside these camps,” he stated.
He explained that NEMA had previously delivered support across multiple regions in the state, including Oyi/Ayamelum, Nnewi South, and Onitsha North/South federal constituencies. “Our intervention is a testament to the Federal Government’s commitment to alleviating the plight of those impacted by natural disasters,” he added.
Chief Paul Odenigbo, Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who represented Governor Charles Soludo, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for its intervention. “We appreciate this timely support and assure everyone that these items will be equitably distributed across the affected areas,” Odenigbo affirmed.
Mr. Ifeanyi Chinweze, Chairman of Anambra East Local Government, also commended NEMA’s efforts, noting, “These supplies will go a long way in alleviating the hardship faced by flood victims.” The relief items included staples like rice, garri, vegetable oil, and essentials like soap, clothing, and sanitary pads, aimed at meeting the immediate needs of the displaced families.
