Remita not scrapped as CBN-approved payment gateway – OAGF

The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, OAGF, has clarified that the Federal Government has not discontinued the use of Remita as the Central Bank of Nigeria-approved payment gateway.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the OAGF explained that rather than being phased out, Remita will be integrated into the Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System, TMRAS, alongside other licensed Payment Solution Service Providers, PSSPs.

This move, the office noted, is aimed at enhancing the liberalization of government revenue collection and remittance processes.

The OAGF further disclosed that the TMRAS is set to launch on March 4, 2025, in line with directives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.

The initiative is designed to strengthen treasury revenue assurance and improve budget performance across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, MDAs, as well as Federal Government-Owned Enterprises, FGOEs.

According to the statement, “The Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System (TMRAS) is developed to streamline and manage the Federal Government’s revenue collection and payment processes for MDAs. It will facilitate the liberalization of government revenue payments, enhance collections, and provide timely and efficient analysis of transaction data.”

Addressing concerns over the status of Remita, the OAGF emphasized that while the platform remains a secure and approved channel for revenue payments, it will now operate alongside other CBN-licensed payment service providers.

“Remita has been a trusted payment gateway, but there are other secure platforms as well. The introduction of TMRAS will enable multiple payment service providers to function within the system, ensuring greater efficiency and inclusivity,” the statement added.

To reassure revenue payers and the general public, the OAGF confirmed that “Remita will continue to serve as the only approved payment gateway for Federal Government transactions for at least the next two months.

“However, the government is working towards assuming control of the front-end payment infrastructure to expand the collection system, thereby accommodating additional CBN-licensed PSSPs.”

The OAGF urged all revenue payers and members of the public to continue using Remita for government payments and to visit www.fgntreasury.gov.ng for further information on Federal Government transactions.
