Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has approved the employment of 34 Resident Doctors for a seven-year residency training programme across FCTA hospitals.
The 34 medical professionals represent the first batch of 60 medical residency trainees across eight specialties, as part of the Minister’s initiative to enhance healthcare delivery in the FCT.
Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, who announced the development in a statement, emphasized that this move marks a significant step forward improving healthcare services in the region.
“This is the first time we are employing doctors for residency training outside the Health Management Board, giving them greater opportunities and ensuring the inclusion of highly skilled professionals in the FCT healthcare system,” Olayinka stated.
The breakdown of the 34 doctors employed includes five in Psychiatry, four in Internal Medicine, one in General Surgery, one in Anesthesiology, eight in Family Medicine, six in Ophthalmology, and nine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Olayinka further revealed that the FCTA Civil Service Commission will soon begin the recruitment process for the remaining 26 Resident Doctors, with vacancies in Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Paediatrics.
This initiative is expected to strengthen the healthcare workforce and improve the quality of medical services available to FCT residents.
