The Nyesom Wike-led administration said it is aggressively pursuing the planned decongestion of the Federal Capital City by opening up the satellite towns.
FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who stated this on Saturday, while inspecting the ongoing construction of the Ushafa–War College Road in Bwari Area Council, said the project, like others in the rural areas, will check rural-urban migration in the nation’s capital.
Wike who was obviously pleased with the level of work done on the project, said when completed, the road would not only decongest traffic gridlock along the axis, but also reduce travel time to the city centre.
In his words, “From here to the city, it’s not up to 35 minutes, and that’s the essence of decongesting the city, making people to stay within their satellite town. Because if you provide the amenities, nobody will be interested in moving to the cities. Urban and rural migration is actually because of lack of amenities and infrastructure in the rural areas.”
Speaking on the rationale behind the satellite town development in the FCT, the minister said, “I’ve said severally that we are not concentrating in the cities, we are also paying attention to the satellite town. The total road length is not less than 12 kilometers. That has linked up the entire Ushafa.”
On the transformation of the area, Wike said, “I mean, to remind people, all of us know how this place was, and see how it looks today. By the time all the street lights have been completed, it will be a different thing, which is that why people will no longer go out to see how they will live in the city.”
The Minister commended the contractor, stating, “Like they said, the few things left should be finished on time. We believe for the first week of June, by the grace of God, we’ll have to start our own.”
