Abu Giri, Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, reportedly slumped while speaking to supporters at a campaign event in Rafin Zurufi on Tuesday.
Witnesses at the venue said the incident occurred suddenly, as the chairman was in the middle of his address, causing panic among supporters at the campaign ground.
He was quickly evacuated from the venue and taken to a hospital for medical attention. The hospital where he is receiving treatment was not disclosed, reportedly for security reasons. Sources at the scene said the situation initially appeared critical, but prompt medical response helped to stabilise him.
As at the time of filing this report, neither the Gwagwalada Area Council nor aides to the chairman had issued an official statement on the incident.
The cause of the collapse remains unclear.
