PDP crisis: Wike seeks reconciliation, return of aggrieved members

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called for urgent reconciliation within the People’s Democratic Party, urging the party leadership to reach out to aggrieved members and reintegrate those who left, insisting that no one who returns will lose their entitlements.
Wike, who made the call at the party’s 108th National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting held at Wadata Plaza, Abuja, pushed for unity and internal restructuring as the PDP attempts to stabilise after months of internal tension and defections.
He urged the National Working Committee to immediately set up a reconciliation team to engage those who left the party, many of whom, he said, were driven out by uncertainty.
“Chairman and your team should put in place a strong committee to reach out to those who are aggrieved. There is room for them to come back, and whatever is due to them will still be given,” he said.
The national leader of the party warned that continued internal disputes could weaken the party’s electoral strength, stressing that reconciliation must be followed by sustained unity rather than temporary peace.
“In life, there must be a period of crisis. What matters is how we resolve the crisis. Now that we are together, we must not stop at reconciliation,” he said.
He reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, dismissing speculation about his departure despite recurring tensions within the party.
“I have been a member of this party since 1998 and I will not leave. Whatever happens, we will continue to live as members of the PDP,” he stated.
Wike also pushed for more openness in party administration, arguing that transparency would help rebuild trust and encourage returnees to rejoin the fold.
“If you engage them, they will understand and support the party. There is need for openness so that we can achieve the unity we desire.”
At the meeting, PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, declared what he described as a new phase for the opposition party, saying the era of uncertainty was over and the focus would now shift to strategy and election preparedness.
“The era of uncertainty is behind us. The era of strategy, consultation, and electoral preparation has begun,” he said, adding that the party would strictly adhere to the Electoral Act and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines in future congresses.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mao Ohuabunwa, also called for unity, warning that exclusionary politics would further weaken the party if not addressed.
He urged members to embrace discipline, internal cohesion and constitutional order, while commending ongoing reforms, including the party’s e-registration initiative aimed at strengthening its internal structure.
