The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, to urgently clear blocked drainages and repair damaged drainage systems in parts of Abuja to address recurring flooding and environmental hazards.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Onuh Onyeche Blessing during plenary last Friday.
Moving the motion, the lawmaker noted that proper maintenance of sewage and waterway systems is essential to preventing flooding, environmental degradation and public health risks.
She expressed concern over persistent flooding along major roads and locations in the Federal Capital Territory, including Shehu Shagari Way, LaSalle Junction and Alvan Ikoku Way at Minister Hill, as well as parts of the area councils.
According to her, the situation has been worsened by poor drainage maintenance and blocked waterways, leading to stagnant water that emits offensive odours and poses serious health risks to residents and commuters.
Blessing warned that the unhygienic conditions created by blocked drains and stagnant water could increase the spread of waterborne diseases and negatively affect the quality of life of residents.
She also lamented what she described as inadequate responses from relevant authorities despite repeated complaints by members of the public.
Following deliberations, the House urged the FCTA and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to immediately clear blocked drains and rehabilitate drainage infrastructure along the affected roads and other flood-prone locations across Abuja.
Lawmakers also called on the FCTA to develop and implement a comprehensive sewage evacuation and drainage maintenance plan aimed at preventing future blockages and flooding.
