Wuse District Hospital has become the first public hospital in Nigeria to receive a High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, HIFU, machine, following the donation of the equipment by Nordica Fertility Centre to the Federal Capital Territory Administration.
The donation, made on Wednesday as part of activities marking Abuja Reproductive Health Week 2026, is expected to expand access to the technology within the public healthcare system and offer eligible women a non-invasive treatment option for selected gynecological conditions.
The equipment was presented to the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, by the Managing Director of Nordica Fertility Centre, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi.
With the donation, Wuse District Hospital becomes the first public health facility in the country to acquire the technology, which has been used in private healthcare settings for the treatment of conditions such as uterine fibroids.
The latest intervention builds on Nordica’s earlier support to the hospital. In 2024, the fertility centre donated a colposcopy machine to strengthen cervical cancer screening and early detection services.
Speaking during the handover, Dr. Fasawe commended Nordica Fertility Centre for partnering with the FCTA to improve healthcare delivery and urged other organisations and individuals to support government efforts in the sector.
She noted that government could not shoulder the responsibility of providing quality healthcare alone and assured that the machine would be properly maintained and deployed for its intended purpose.
The Mandate Secretary also announced that the first 100 eligible patients would receive HIFU treatment free of charge as part of efforts to improve access to reproductive healthcare services in the territory.
Activities marking Abuja Reproductive Health Week continue on Thursday with practical training sessions for doctors, nurses and radiographers to build capacity and ensure effective use of the new technology for patient care.
