Ugochinyere rejects court ruling on ADC, APP

The National Leader of the Coalition of United Political Parties and member of the House of Representatives, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has rejected a court ruling directing the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister the African Democratic Congress, the Action People’s Party and other political parties.

Ugochinyere argued that the judgment had been overtaken by subsequent court decisions and therefore could not stand.

In a statement on Monday, the lawmaker described the ruling as a threat to multiparty democracy and warned against actions that could limit political participation ahead of future elections.

He maintained that political parties should not be deregistered in a manner that undermines constitutional provisions and democratic principles.

The lawmaker also called on the National Judicial Council and the Nigerian Bar Association to examine the circumstances surrounding the judgment.

Ugochinyere expressed confidence that the ruling would not affect the continued existence of the affected political parties, insisting that higher court decisions had already addressed the issues raised in the case.
