Anambra police deny bias in Anglican Church leadership dispute

The Anambra State Police Command says its deployment of officers to St Faith Anglican Church in Awka was strictly for security purposes, dismissing allegations that it is taking sides in the church’s leadership dispute.

The police presence on Sunday followed a directive by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, asking the Archbishop of the Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka, Most Reverend Alexander Ibezim, to proceed on six months’ compulsory leave.

In a statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the deployment was intended to protect lives and property, maintain public order and prevent possible unrest.

He stressed that the presence of security personnel should not be interpreted as support for any faction involved in the dispute.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to impartial law enforcement and the protection of citizens’ rights, regardless of their religious affiliations.

It also urged media organisations and social media users to verify information before sharing reports that could heighten tensions within the religious community.

The police warned that it would not allow the disagreement to escalate into a threat to public peace and security.
