The Commissioner of Finance in Benue state, Mr David Olofu has urged governments at all levels to involve professional managers in managing Nigeria’s resources in order to solve the problems of mismanagement plaguing the nation.
The commissioner stated this in his office in Makurdi when members of the Nigerian lnstitute of Management, NIM, Chartered, visited to present to him a letter of conferment of Distinguished Fellowship Award.
He noted that one of the problems bedevilling the country is that of management said Nigeria needs people with knowledge and experience to manage its resources and put the country on the path of development.
While he charged the authorities to look the way of the institute with the aim of harvesting quality manpower, Olofu said, “we have an institute that has the responsibility of training people, grooming people to become professional managers. So the institute has its assignment clearly cut out because, today, more that ever before, we need professional managers, we need people who have the knowledge, the experience to help manage the resources of this country so we can develop as a nation.”
The Abuja Inquirer reports that the Nigerian lnstitute of Management had written to the commissioner to award him fellowship position.
In the letter titled “Elevation to the Distinguished Grade of Fellow,” signed by the Acting Registrar and Chief Executive, Jude Iheanacho, the President and Chairman of Council of the institute, Major General Abdullahi Muraina, Rtd, said the award is conferred on members who have contributed to the development of the institute, management profession and the civil society at large.
Receiving the letter, the commissioner who has been a member since 2000 said he was delighted on the award pointing out that “This is the pinnacle of membership of the institute and this is what every member look forward to, to attain the fellowship of the institute. So I am deeply humbled and appreciative of this gesture.”
He expressed his commitment and dedication to the ideals of the institute saying “it is only when we individually continues to promote and be good ambassadors of the institute that it will achieve the objectives for its establishment.
While he pledged continuous support to the Institute, both at the local and national level, the finance boss said he will work with its leadership to increase the membership strength and institutionalize the key management principles promoted by NIM in the state management system.
Earlier, the President and Chairman of council, NIM, chartered, Maj. Gen. Abdullahi Muraina Rtd. represented by the Chairman NIM Benue chapter, Dr. David Bauchi, had presented the letter to Mr Olofu thanking him for his numerous roles as a pillar of the institute.
He noted that he met all the criteria for the elevation and his track record of assistance to the institute and the society speaks for him.
