Death toll from the Wednesday night Karu truck accident has reached 10, the FCT Emergency Management Department, FEMD, has said.
Recall that the FCT Police Command had on Thursday said 6 persons lost their lives in the multiple accident which occurred around 7pm on Wednesday, involving a Compressed Natural Gas CNG truck and other vehicles.
Hours later, the FCT Emergency Management Department, FEMD, confirmed that four additional victims later lost their lives to the truck explosion that occurred at Karu bridge along Abuja / Keffi expressway.
The Head Forecasting Response and Mitigation of FEMD, Mark Nyam, said eight bodies were deposited at the Karu Hospital Morgue, one body at the Asokoro Distinct Hospital Morgue while another was deposited at the National Hospital.
He revealed that over 30 persons suffered various degrees of burns, with some of the victims referred to Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital, Federal Medical Centre, Keffi and Cedercrest Hospital Abuja for proper care.
A statement by the spokesperson of FEMD, Nkechi Isa, states that, “No fewer than 10 vehicles were burnt during the incident.”
The Ag. Director General of FEMD Engr Abdulrahman Mohammed, appealed to motorists to observe traffic rules and regulations. He cautioned against reckless driving, dangerous overtaking and poor maintenance of vehicles.
