The Federal Government has disbursed N50 billion to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and other university-based unions.
The move, which fulfils a key promise by President Bola Tinubu to address outstanding earned allowances, was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, in a statement on Wednesday.
According to Alausa, the disbursement underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector and reflects his administration’s broader agenda to transition Nigeria toward a knowledge-driven economy through targeted investments in human capital and academic infrastructure.
The statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, Boriowo Folasade, quoted the minister as saying “this gesture goes beyond settling financial obligations.
“It reaffirms the President’s confidence in Nigeria’s youth and the critical role played by both academic and non-academic staff in shaping the nation’s future.”
The minister also conveyed Tinubu’s appreciation to the university unions for maintaining industrial peace and for their continued cooperation with government reforms in higher education.
“The future of our youth is a priority. Ensuring that our students remain in school is non-negotiable. We are working towards a future where academic disruptions are permanently behind us,” he said.
He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to sustained engagement with stakeholders to guarantee accessible, high-quality education for all Nigerian children, aligning with global standards.
