The Federal University Lokoja, FUL, has announced the appointment of Prof Gbenga Ibileye as its 4th Vice-Chancellor, with effect from February 15, 2026.
Fourth Governing Council of the university, led by Prof Zubairu Tajo Abdallah, approved the appointment following what was described as a transparent, merit-based and highly competitive selection process.
A statement issued by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, said Ibileye emerged successful after an extensive interview exercise involving eleven distinguished professors who were shortlisted after rigorous screenings, interactions and evaluations, in line with extant guidelines for the appointment of principal officers in Nigerian federal universities.
Ibileye topped the exercise with an overall score of 91.9, placing first among the candidates. He will succeed the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Prof Olayemi Akinwumi, whose tenure has been widely acknowledged as one of the most impactful in the history of the University.
Prof Akinwumi’s administration recorded significant achievements in consolidating academic culture, advancing infrastructural development, expanding academic programmes, improving staff and student welfare, strengthening institutional stability, and enhancing the national relevance of the University.
The Governing Council commended all candidates who participated in the process for their professionalism and commitment, while reassuring the University community of its unwavering dedication to transparency, due process and excellence in governance.
As the Federal University Lokoja prepares to enter a new phase of leadership, the Council expressed confidence that Prof Ibileye will build on existing achievements and steer the institution towards greater academic excellence, innovation and global competitiveness.
Members of the University community have congratulated the Visitor, Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, the Governing Council, Management, staff and students on the successful conduct of what has been described as a credible and exemplary Vice-Chancellorship appointment exercise.
