The Federal Capital Territory Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has commended the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI, for its Elderly Support Scheme, describing the programme as a timely intervention that reinforces the place of senior citizens as valued, protected and supported members of society.
Mahmoud spoke at the third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative under the Social Investment Programme for the Elderly Support Scheme, held in Abuja, where she stressed the need to treat the aged with dignity rather than neglect.
According to a statement by the Special Assistant to the Minister, Austine Elemue, the Minister said the theme of the event, “Finding Joy in Old Age,” was both apt and profound, noting that old age should be a season of fulfilment and peace, not loneliness or hardship.
Mahmoud, in the statement, attributed the initiative to the compassionate vision of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, whose Renewed Hope Initiative, has continued to cater for people across different segments of society, including the elderly and other vulnerable groups.
She said, “By prioritizing elderly welfare, the Office of the First Lady reaffirmed that those who laboured in their youth deserved care, respect, and security in later years.”
Mahmoud further reaffirmed that the welfare of senior citizens remains a top priority, adding that the FCT Administration, through the Women Affairs Secretariat, is committed to social protection, healthcare access, emotional support and social inclusion for the elderly, recognising that true joy comes from feeling seen, heard and appreciated.
She described the event as more than a social intervention, but a statement of gratitude and a call to action for families, communities and institutions to uphold the dignity of the elderly, draw from their wisdom and ensure that no one is left behind.
The Minister also commended the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat for its consistency, acknowledged partners for their support and urged beneficiaries to remain hopeful and engaged, while advocating for a society where ageing is embraced with joy, supported by care and celebrated with honour.
In her remarks, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, described elderly persons as custodians of culture, wisdom and collective memory.
She revealed that in recognition of the critical role of senior citizens, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, through the governing council of the Renewed Hope Initiative, directed all state chapters to recognise, celebrate and bring joy to the elderly.
Benjamins-Laniyi also commended the Renewed Hope Initiative for its inclusive approach, irrespective of religion, tribe and gender, saying, “The RHI Elderly Support Scheme goes beyond material support. It is about affirmation, validation, affirming that you, our elders, not only do you matter, you are seen, you are celebrated, you are valued, you are respected.”
